Be good students and do your homework so that you are
prepared to jump in and start sewing.

The pattern suggests that you select 36 fat quarters (with 6 being in
a variety of greens for grass, trees and stems).  Kaye decided to select
a fat quarter bundle of 8 pieces from her stash and then added lots of
scraps that blended with the FQ bundle.  You can choose a color theme,
a designer that you love, all polka dots, or just mix it up as we go!

The authors of the pattern suggest that width of fabric should be used
when possible for the longer cuts. This will prevent stretchiness.  The
appliqued hillside row calls for a 1 ½ yards for the grass so that it can be cut on the width of grain to avoid having to piece it (6 inch x 54 inches). You can use the extra green fabric in other areas of your top.

The outer border calls for 2 ¼ yards so that you can also cut this on the width of grain.  This will be cut to four width of grain strips that measure 2 ½ inches each (Kaye generally cuts her outer border a bit larger so that there is enough to square up if needed). You can use the extra fabric in other areas of your top.

From your four yards of neutral fabric (background), cut off 80 inches width of fabric.
Sub cut the 80 inches of neutral as follows:
1 ½ inches x 80 inches (for inner borders)
1 ½ inches x 80 inches (for inner borders)
1 ½ inches x 80 inches (for inner borders)
1 ½ inches x 80 inches (for inner borders)
13 ½ inches x 54 inches
(This will be used for the Happy Trails appliqued row with the camper)

26 inches to be used for piecing in other areas of the quilt
1 ½ inches x 54 inches (for horizontal sashing between rows)
1 ½ inches x 54 inches (for horizontal sashing between rows)
1 ½ inches x 54 inches (for horizontal sashing between rows)
1 ½ inches x 54 inches (for horizontal sashing between rows)
1 ½ inches x 54 inches (for horizontal sashing between rows)
1 ½ inches x 54 inches (for horizontal sashing between rows)
1 ½ inches x 54 inches (for horizontal sashing between rows)
1 ½ inches x 54 inches (for horizontal sashing between rows)
1 ½ inches x 54 inches (for horizontal sashing between rows)
1 ½ inches x 54 inches (for horizontal sashing between rows)
Pin a note to these strips and set aside.

At each month’s workshop we will provide “homework” so that you are ready for the next month’s workshop.
